MapHaven : Patches

Note #1; which Language version of the game do you have? UK-english, US-english, or other? If in doubt, follow instructions below to check. Download the patches that match.

Note #2; if you have any difficulties downloading the patches, it might be because you have a download manager on. At present download managers are not supported by MapHaven's file retrieval system, although it is on the 'to-do' list, and instead of getting sent ten different bits of the file in parallel, you will get sent ten different copies of the file! Turn the download manager off for this download.

Note #3; some people have complained of problems, particularly with the UK 1.0->1.3 patch. In at least one case, the apparent problems weren't; the patch had successfully installed. If this is the case for you, the game will still be playable, and 'Shadow Movement' and 'Combat Grid' will be added to the the combat options screen (and can be activated, of course.)

To check which version your game is patched to, 3D0 provides the following instructions:

If you are unsure of which version of Heroes IV is installed on your system, follow these steps:

Go to Start | Find | Files and folders.
In the "Named" field, type heroes4.exe
In the "Look in" pull-down, make sure that (C:\)
Make sure that "Include subfolders" is checked and hit "Find Now"
You can check the version number of your "heroes4.exe" file by right-clicking on the file, choosing Properties, and clicking on the Version tab. Then on the "File Version Description".

You still need to know which expansion(s) you have installed. At present there are no patches for Winds of War installations (i.e. if you have Winds of War installed, you are fully patched as at March 2003.)

Note #4; There is a version-independent patch to take the base game from version 2.0 (Multiplayer) to 2.1. It affects the map editor. Make sure you get that as well!

HOMM4 patches for US version
These are the patches for Heroes of Might and Magic 4; 1.0 to 1.2, 1.2 to 1.3, 1.3 to 2.0, 2.0 to 2.2, and 2.2 to 3.0. There was no public 1.1 that we know of. Yes, you do have to download several patches and apply them successively.

The 1.2 patch fixes a bunch of bugs and adds a combat grid and combat movement shadow. The 1.2->1.3 patch fixes the performance degradation problems (that meant people could only play for a certain amount of time before the game slowed and they needed to restart.) Version 2.0 introduces the multiplayer functionality. Version 2.2 fixes some bugs that could be used to cheat in multiplayer. Version 3.0 apparently fixes 'smartheap' errors.

This is the US version only! And does not work for copies of the game purchased in other countries.

If the file, once downloaded, is not an .exe, simply rename it to an .exe and then run it. This appears to vary depending on the browser people are using.

If you are using a download manager, and have trouble downloading the patch from here, try turning the download manager off temporarily - different download managers do things in different ways, and they don't all work with the way MapHaven fishes requested files out of the database. (Some download managers do work, but may name the file only with the object id, not the filename! We're working on ways to improve this.)

Patches for UK version
This is the patch for non-USA, english versions of the game.

Please check to make sure you have the correct version of Heroes of Might and MagicВ® IV, before downloading.

You can verify your version of Heroes of Might and Magic IV by going to your system registry. To verify do the following.

*** WARNING NOTE *** Do not make or save any changes in your system registry. Any damages to your system resulting from your changes to the system registry will not be supported by Customer Support.

Click on the Start button, choose Run, then type in the following command: Regedit Then click on OK.
Go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic IV\1.0 folder.
Double-click on the "Language" setting (usually second from the bottom).
Reference the "Data" value from the below list.
Exit the Registry Editor and then download the correct patch file for your Language Value.

NOTE: Many of our distributers and licensees are using the UK 1.0 version. If your Language Value follows the 809 code please download the UK 809 patch file.

409 = US
809 = UK
40c = French
410 = Italian
40a = Spanish
40f = German

Map Editor Patch
Once you've patched your game to 2.0, there's another patch to install - this one takes the game to version 2.1, and fixes some problems in the campaign editor, problems which were introduced by the 2.0 patch - in particular, there were ways to get 'Gathering Storm' creatures available in the campaign editor. (Apparently you could give the creatures in events - and although they *looked* like magi in the game, because the creature artwork wasn't available, they acted like whatever you'd given - Gargantuans, Evil Sorceresses, etc.)

This patch apparently works for all language versions of the game.


	Heroes patch 2.0->2.1; all languages.

Gathering Storm patches for US version
Patch 2.0 to 2.2 in 'The Gathering Storm' fixes a few multiplayer issues, most notably two significant bugs that could be used to cheat!

Gathering Storm patches for UK version
These are the 'international english' versions of the Gathering Storm patches.

(Incidentally, if you have the UK version of the base game, you need the UK version of the expansion; and the US base game needs the US expansion; and I still don't know why the two versions are different.)
