In many ways Heroes of Might and Magic 4 is quite unlike its predecessors. Where earlier versions maintained a strict separation between Heroes and Creatures, and generally prevented one moving around without the other, HOMM4 blurs the distinction and removes the restrictions. Where earlier versions fought on a coarse hex grid, with one or two hex creatures and retaliation following damage dealing, HOMM4 uses a fine *square* grid and simultaneous damage dealing. People have claimed that therefore HOMM4 is less Chess-like and more like other strategy games.
HOMM4 creatures trickle in every day, rather than turning up en masse each week. The spells are different - no more blind; but multiple spell-casters in one army. The skills are different - no more wisdom; no more 'Expert Slow' from someone without wisdom. The game is not going to appeal to quite the same group of people that loved HOMM3.
But it's still going to appeal to most of the same people. And it's still a worthwhile game.
