Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a classic Turn-Based Strategy game. The basic elements of the game involve developing a town (building structures that produce resources, or armies) and conquering the land with a hero leading a large army and casting spells. But if you didn't already know that, you probably want to visit another website ... because MapHaven doesn't carry a great deal in terms of facts and figures. The original release of HOMM3, without any expansions, is generally referred to as 'Restoration of Erathia', or RoE. It came with eight town types, each with seven creatures, each with upgraded and un-upgraded forms, and a few wandering creatures (elementals). The first expansion of HOMM3 is called 'Armageddon's Blade'. It added a slew of wandering creatures, mostly ones which had been in HOMM2 in some form but were missing in RoE, and a ninth town type - the Conflux. (NWC had originally planned for the ninth town to be the Forge, a town combining fantasy and technological elements, of evil alignment; however this was very poorly recieved by many fans, and the idea was withdrawn.) The expansion introduced two new artifacts; the vial of dragon's blood, an ordinary relic, and Armageddon's Blade - in some sense, a combination artifact. AB also introduced two terrain overlays which influenced the casting of spells - Cursed Ground and Magic Plains. Another feature, very popular amongst those who played the game a lot, was the addition of a random map generator. The second expansion of HOMM3 is called 'Shadow of Death'. In some sense SoD is not an expansion at all; it came with the basic game (RoE) and was priced accordingly. SoD did not introduce any new towns or creatures; the biggest thing that was new in the game was 'Combination Artifacts'. (Note that AB or RoE installations which have been patched using the patch version released with SoD also have combination artifacts; however, once assembled in these versions, they cannot be dis-assembled. Subsequent patches removed this accidental feature.) The other thing that is significant about SoD is the range of options it provided for Mapmakers; extra monoliths, varying sizes of terrain overlay, map-wide banning of spells or artifacts, stuff like that; and for some people the biggest single reason for upgrading to SoD is to gain access to the range of high-quality amateur maps produced using SoD. HOMM3 Complete comprises all three versions of the game, and is logically equivalent to installing both SoD and AB. There is an un-official add-on to Heroes 3; it is called 'In the Wake of Gods' (or WoG) and is installed over SoD or H3Complete. It allows mapmakers to redefine many of the rules or limitations of the game, and is therefore very powerful, although there are not as yet very many good maps written using it. WoG (also referred to as HOMM3.5) has been patched frequently in the months following its first release, with each patch adding new functionality; the mod may now be used for multiplayer games and random maps!
